Motorola V3 RAZR

After my 2-year contract was up, I was faced with a choice of phones for my hardware renewal. I knew I wanted Bluetooth and a camera, and a speakerphone and usb connection are a bonus, but that narrowed it down to a couple. The Motorola V3c Razr just looks so slick I couldn’t resist. I’ll have it for 3 years now, but I think it’s worth it. The Bluetooth headset is the feature I use the most, but I like having a camera with me all the time. I used to have a Motorola C350 with a tiny 3-line screen, so the huge screen is a welcome change. I have a calendar with me all the time and with a driver available online, I can charge the phone from any usb port. There is a program you can get call MobilePhone Tools that allows you to transfer ringtones, videos, pictures, contacts, and calendar entries, but I haven’t got the cash for that… yet.

Plantronics Explorer™ 320 Bluetooth® Headset

Next stop in my spending spree was a Bluetooth headset. As I mentioned, it may not work with Dell’s handhelds, it works great with the laptop and new cell phone. It has a single button to control it, but it performs different functions depending on how long you hold it down for. Let me summarize the steps to call someone using only the headset:
- Hold button for 3 seconds, headset turns on an connects to phone
- Press button for 2 seconds, say the name of who I want to dial
- Press the button breifly if its the correct name and it dials
- Talk for several hours then press the button to hang up
With 240 hour standby time and a tiny internal battery, this headset is a pretty good value for the cost.

Optimus Mini.

It’s a bit on the pricey side, but I do have a birthday coming up and I know this Optimus Mini is going to be on my wishlist. This is a smaller version of the OLED keyboard being worked on, which will dynamically adapt to the program you’re using. This mini version is looking more like a dashboard option with the ability to display new email, current playing song, cpu stats, clock, slideshows, stock ticker, and much more. It will be available for pre-order on Feb 8, with a shipping date of May 15. The full-size keyboard is going to take a little longer, and be out on July 17th.

Dell Axim X51v

So I sprung for a real handheld pc and I’m pretty happy with it. I lived with Palm OS for several years and I got tired of the crashes, so I thought I’d try Windows Mobile 5. I got Dell’s best Axim on a sale with a metal case without much fustration. Even if you must talke to India, call if you have any questions because the website has severe problems. My order didn’t show up online until the day before it was delivered. I emalled support with a question about an accessory and after waiting 4 days, I ended up calling.
Ordering headache aside, it’s not a bad unit. This model has 256mb which is far more than most handhelds. Expansion slots for SD and CompactFlash work out well with the two digital camera I use. Bluetooth syncronization with my PC is fairly painless to setup and the Wireless B works well with software like Resco Explorer to browse the LAN. I’ll be posting reviews of software that I try with it.
I should warn anyone looking at a Dell PDA that they have crippled Bluetooth. If you are unfamiliar with Bluetooth, it’s basically a short-range wireless technology. If has profiles for different uses, such as headset, file transfer, dial-up access, etc. Dell has taken out headset and headphones profiles for an unknown reason. So the Bluetooth headset I will be posting next works great with the new phone I will also be posting about and the laptop, but not the handheld. I was looking forward to Skype for Pocket PC.
