iTunes 7.0

While the real reason behind the iTunes updates was probably Movies support, there are a couple new features that can make windows feel more like a Mac. The store has a different shade of blue in the background now and I assume movies will be coming soon. iPod w/video users can take advantage of store.

They’ve also added a couple new views, one including album covers next to a track listing of each album:

And another view featuring the eye-candy dubbed coverflow:

One feature I do like is the new iPod view:

I should warn that all the fancy effects add a slightly greater strain, so you may want to avoid coverflow on slower computers.

Apple Launches New iPods, iTunes

If you’ve been living under a rock, Apple has sparked a media frenzy today with its launch of the next generations of 3 iPods as well as the next version of iTunes.

The force behind the iPod w/video and iTunes updates was Movies. Yes, you can now purchase and download movies through iTunes, then download it to an iPod and watch anywhere. It’s not the iPod Video I was hoping for, as there have been images floating around of an iPod where the screen covers the whole front of the screen, but it does have downloadable games now.

The iPod Nano has been updated and merged with the iPod Mini. It’s the same size Nano, but with the tacky Mini look. So glad I have my v1 Nano in black.

The shuffle has also been updated and is trying to capture the amazingly tiny market.

MS CRM Installation Problems

We finally have all our data migrated from Maximizer 7 into MS CRM 3.0. I was using Outlook 2007, which doesn’t yet interface with CRM, but now that we can use data I’ve gone back to Outlook 2003. This sounds all fine and dandy, but I just spend the last 3 hours getting Outlook and then CRM working.
Outlook would crash on every attempt to open it. I would breifly see a CRM menu at the top before the crash, even though it was no longer installed as an Add-In or showing up in Add/Remove programs. I’m now in a new XP profile and Outlook is working properly.

Then the fun with CRM started: It wouldn’t detect the version of Outlook I’m running, even though I completely removed all Office versions, restarted and installed Office 2003. One fix used to be adding the crm server to the local intranet zone in Internet Explorer’s options, but that had no effect. Another person suggested reinstalling the lastest Windows Installer. After some scouring and repairing, I found a fix that should work for any minor error with CRM installs: a registry hack to make it proceed despite errors.

Under HKCU\Software\Microsoft  create a registry entry for MSCRMClient
Under MSCRMClient create a new reg_dword key called “IgnoreChecks”
Make the value 1

Re-run the installation. You will get the same error, however the Next button will be available and the install should complete without errors.

For those who think DRM has gotten out of control, there is some temporary relief from iTunes song restrictions. I haven’t tried this program, but it looks much more friendly than some other solutions I’ve seen with lengthy conversions.

MS CRM Quick Company Searching

Since we installed CRM, it has been akward to find contacts within a certain company. We couldn’t search for the parent company while looking at contacts. We’d have to go to companies, do a search for a company, open it, and click on Contacts on the side. CRM just isn’t fast enough to do these simple steps in less than 20 seconds. I never thought to look for the fix, but apparently you can choose which fields CRM searches for in quick searches. Now it takes only a couple seconds and CRM feels a lot more useable.
