Alana Taylor: Internet Evolution 1969 – 2007

If this is what the internet looks like now I can’t imagine how big it will be in another 10 years.

Can World of Warcraft make you smarter?

Can World of Warcraft™ make you smarter?. Hard to improve on perfection, I know, but I have to believe all those hours grinding for a dragon weren’t wasted.

Flickr Video

Flickr recently released a new feature which has caused a bit of an uprising. The videos can only be 90 seconds long, and are higher quality than many websites. Currently, only Pro accounts are able to post these videos.

Here’s an example of a video posted to the service:

The argument against videos on flickr seems to be “youtube is just for video, flickr is just for photos.” I know youtube has gotten a bit of a bad name with so much less-than-useful content. This is probably what most people are afraid of Flickr becoming. But 90 seconds isn’t long enough for an effective rant. The simple fact that flickr video isn’t free will keep most whiney teens away.

The next argument being used is how much bandwidth it will take and the site will turn into molasses. Well there seem to be a lot of videos on there already, with no slowdown. The site is owned by Yahoo, not the neighbor next door – they know what they’re doing.

There are actually petitions with over 2600 signatures to remove video from Flickr. I expect a lot more signatures from selfish people who want to take away a great feature from probably millions of people who love their videos. No one’s forcing them to post video, it hasn’t affected the quality of the service, and the time limit is too short for the average whiney teen in their 30’s.

Picasa handles videos along with photos, why shouldn’t online storage of our media have everything in one place?

Update: The video has been removed, but it used to show a very thin screen being bent as it played a movie. Here is a still from the video:

Lost in translation

I’ve been looking for automated translation options for a client and found an interesting website called Lost in Translation. You put in a phrase and it uses babelfish to translation from english to another language and back several times. The result should be the same as you entered but that is rarey the case. I entered “I am addicted to coke” (caffiene, honest) and it came out “They are poisoned, the carbonates of the end”. Could this be a sign to cut back?

World of Warcraft

lodisOne of my frequent occupations is World of Warcraft, a MMORPG. Basically, you control a character that can interact with all the other people controlling characters. Its set in a fantasy world with different races and everyone is at war with each other as well as demons scattered around the virtual world.

The character to the right is my main character, Lodis, who just got his mount (the cat he’s riding which goes 60% faster than running). It’s quite a big world so any movement speed increase is welcome. As you can see from the tiny image here, the gear has been color coordinated, which delayed getting his mount until yesterday at lvl 45. There was also some spell training involved in the delay. Lodis harvested and sold Gromsblood for about 1g each to go from 5 to 80 gold in a week.

418446911 516799d17aLodis has also spent more than a few gold on pets like the moth to the left. These pets follow you around and don’t actually do anything but attract other player’s attention.

I’ve installed some add-ons to improve the experience. You can see what my interface looks like to the right. Some of the add-ons display information, like Titanbar across the top, cartographer which keeps notes on the map, or ItemStats which remembers every item I’ve seen. Others add functionality such as automatically feeding hunter pets or serving character profiles while role-playing. Only problem is the stream of updates to the game can break add-ons you come to rely on.
