I’ve been with Dreamhost for over a year now, and despite some downtime they seem to be doing pretty good. I’m always on the lookout for the best hosting value, and I’ve been hearing about MediaTemple and how its supposed to be so much more reliable, but why do they have such outageous ping times in comparison?
Mon.itor.us tests ping times from the US and Europe, and I’ve been using them for a couple months now to compare. MediaTemple consistently has irratic ping times and downtime alerts while Dreamhost is relatively stable, as shown in these graphs:
This comparison is based on shared servers for both hosts, but I’d say Dreamhost is doing much better this year. Its interesting to note that the US, where the servers are located, has a higher ping time than Europe.
I’m not saying Dreamhost is always better than MediaTemple, but have you seen the confusing MT control panel? It’s a wall of icons! Dreamhost at least categorizes into an expanding menu.
